Primary Eyecare Acute Referral Scheme (PEARS)

The PEARS enhanced service (Primary Eyecare Acute Referral Scheme) was launched in July 2013. The scheme is accessible to all patients with a registered GP in Shropshire or Telford & Wrekin. It covers the investigation of acute onset symptoms such as flashing lights and floaters, watery eyes, red eyes and headaches etc.

On the RHS of this page are all the forms needed in your practice for examination and management of a patient on the PEARS scheme.

Please note that the patient contact form must be completed for every patient and kept with the consent form for audit.

To improve communication with GPs and ensure consistency between practices, it has been agreed that the patient's GP should be informed of the outcome of a PEARS examination for each patient episode, even if the outcome requires no action from the GP. Please use Shropshire referral form B for this and ensure it is clearly indicated whether any GP action is required.

Accreditation to the scheme involves watching lectures and the completion of MCQs through WOPEC online learning, and a practical assessment of six OSCE stations.

WOPEC Codes are available from Emma Close-Davies
