Cheshire Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service

All the Cheshire PCTs have operated a SL-BIO based Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service since the mid 1990s. This service  has  now being  replaced by a National Screening Committee compliant Digital Retinal Camera based scheme.

Optometrists with any queries from about Diabetic Retinopathy Screening should contact Lyndon Taylor by e-mail or on   01... but please be patient...  remember that I do have to  see a few patients as well!

IMPORTANT: Tuesday 15th Sept

We have now replaced the V4 installer  on the website. We had identified a number of issues with the camera capture in V4.1.22. Orion have now identified the problem and supplied a new version which appears to fix the known issues. The version now on the top right hand side of this page is V 4.1.30 which is the version which we will need installed before shut down on the 5th of October.

If you havent installed V4 yet, please download the V4 Installer and install it on all the PCs you use for DRSS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and complete the tests as on the original instructions that were sent to you a couple of weeks ago.

If you have already installed V4,  you will need to upgrade your instalation to the new release. Unfortunately this cannot be via an auto update so you will need to download the new installer and manually re-install V4. This does not take as long as the original install (usually 5 mins per PC once you have downloaded the file which takes 4-10 mins depennding on internet access speed). Please do another test patient on your camera PC V4 following the original instructions in section 11(e). You mayneed to re-set the camera as in 11(e)vi again. Please let Vicky at DRSS know when you have completed this test

Finally:- Sorry for the extra work, it WILL be worth it in the long run!

New Instructions for V4.1.30

By and large the instructions are the same as those for V4.1.22 that you have already received a few small differences

  • The password is the same
  • After you enter the password, Windows will usually ask you if you are happy to install software from a non-approved supplier. Obviously you will need to agree to this to continue!
  • We have not had enough time to test every type of install so it is possible that screens may appear in a slightly different order or with slightly different text to the original instructionsin some cases. However, clicking the "I agree", "continue", "Next" or "Yes" button should be pretty obvious.
  • If you are doing a re-install to upgrade V4.1.22 to V4.1.30, you willl only see a very small subset of the original install screens, typically from 8(n) onwards.
  • Once you have completed the instal, the desktop icons will not initially look like boxes with gog wheels in but just white "unknown file" type icons. However, the first time youclick on them, they will change into the expected icons.
  • You will also find an icon called "CanCap" on your desktop. If you have a Canon DGi camera, leave it alone, if you have any other make of camera, it is completely redundant, please feel free to delete it

Update August 2009

The long awaited V4 of the Orion DRSS software is finally available. The good news is that it is very considerably faster than the current version. Logging on and off now takes a few seconds as does getting lists of patients for grading etc.

The bad news is that it will take us about 5 weeks to get the software installed in all 55 practices and a further 2 weeks during which we will not be able to screen patients (5th to 18th October) before we can start using the new software on 19th October.

The Installer package for the new version is the top file on the list to the right of this screen. You need to download it and follow the installation instructions that will be sent to you by the DRSS admin team.

Instructions for download

Click here Orion DRSS V4.1 Installer  or on the file icon at the top of the list to the right of this page.  You will be prompted where to save this file on your PC. Put it anywhere conveninet but usually the easiest place is to put it onthe dektop. It will take between 5 and 15 minutes to download depending on your local broadband speed. You will need tohave this programme on every PC on which you run DRSS. You can either download it directly to each PC from this website (easy to do but  slow)  or if you know how to, you can copy it from one PC to the other by shared drives/folders or using a USB memory stick.

Once you have downloaded the programme, READ the instructions that you received from the DRSS team  BEFORE running it. To begin with you will need the password to open the installer programme which  can only be found  in the written instructions.

Pilot Database

One or 2 practices have reported difficulty in "finding the Pilot Database". You do not need to find it. At present V4.1 is linked ONLY to the pilot database and when you log in to V4 you are already in and using the Pilot Database. The Pilot Database is a full snapshot copy of our main live patient database from early Jnr 2009. It works exactly the same way as the current version of Orion does. To find patients to do a test grade, select the grader page and grade images button, select 2nd full disease grades and click search. a list of al lthe second grades that were awaiting grading in early Jube will apear (and a in about 5 seconds not 5mins as well!!!).

To check your camera, follow the instructions in 11(e). What will happen at stage 11(e)iii  is that it will offer you a list of any patients who were booked into clinics but not yet photographed  between the date that the database snapshot was taken and today. Just pick one at random and use them as your test patient. It doesnt matter how much you mess up this test database, all images taken, patient info, episodes etc will be deleted on 12th October and replaced with a our current main live database which will  go live on the 19th October.
