Eye Health Alliance
The Eye Health Alliance is a coalition of nine organisations including the professional and representative optical bodies and eye care charities who promote eye health for all and campaign to reduce the high level of avoidable sight loss in the UK. They campaign to:
- raise awareness of the importance of eye health for everyone;
- promote the health benefits of regular eye tests, and
- reduce the high levels of avoidable sight loss in the UK.
UK Vision Strategy
The Eye Health Alliance was involved in the development of the UK Vision Strategy which was published in April 2008, setting out a framework for improving eye health services over the next five years. The UK Vision Strategy is a ground-breaking Vision2020 UK initiative, led by RNIB, to develop a unified plan for action on all issues relating to sight loss and eye health, across the four countries of the UK.
The UK Vision Strategy has been developed in response to the World Health Assembly Vision 2020 resolution to reduce avoidable blindness by the year 2020. The Eye Health Alliance is working to improve the eye health of the nation, a key aim of the strategy.

Eye Health Alliance Vision Card
As part of the General Election campaign to target local MPs and the candidates in the run up to the Election, a manifesto card has been produced. The attached card gives 6 key messages for local MPs and the candidates from the other parties. These are the 6 asks we want the local MP to take on board and support. The practice visit can be used to discuss these topics with the local MP or candidate and act as a prompt to the optometrist who is hosting the visit. The manifesto card can also be given to the MP or candidate to take away at the end of the visit.
To order free hard copies of the card (these are credit card size) please contact Jacque Hudson on [email protected]
Many LOCs have already organised practice visits for the local MP and for those in marginal constituencies, for the candidates of the other party. A toolkit is available on the LOCSU website here with all the information you need to set up a visit. These visits are also a great way to gain some positive local media coverage.
If you need any further information or help with organising a visit please contact Heather Marshall on [email protected] or Eleanor de Kanter on [email protected]
