New Glaucoma Repeat Readings Service

East, West and Central Cheshire (South and Vale Royal) now all operate a local Glaucoma Repeat Readings Service. This is an enhanced service for repeat readings on patients with elevated IOPs and/or suspect visual fields, in the presence of healthy looking optic discs and open anterior chamber angles. This scheme is run on a secure webstar internet platform.

As you may be aware NICE have published new guidelines for glaucoma which will affect the way in which the GRR service will be run please read the information below for more details

The repeat IOP readings must be taken using a Goldmann / Perkins tonometer. The repeat fields must be carried out on a machine that is able to produce a printout (excluding FDT).


The new service will require a few things to be done by the practice in order to register:

  • Complete QIO and Contract checklists. This is identical to the work that most practices have already completed to take part in the OHT monitoring service and the Leighton Post Op Cataract Follow Up Service so the only extra work required will be uploading the documents again. Any practices who don’t currently take part in these services will need to complete checklists first. Most of them are in fact the same as required for your GOS Contract compliance anyway. Practices already registered for either East or West Cheshire GRR services will automatically have access to the new service as soon as its added to Webstar and need take no further action.


Practitioners also need to complete these steps to participate:


  • The WOPEC Glaucoma part 1 training Module. This is the same as the first part of the course that many of you did for the OHT monitoring service and all you need to do is upload the same certificate again. If you haven’t done this WOPEC module yet, it is a set of about 4 or 5 on line lectures with MCQs and (and CET points). To get a free log on code to complete this module contact For the avoidance of doubt, this GRR service only requires the part 1 lectures/MCQs whereas the OHT monitoring service also requires the part 2 OSCEs as well.
  •  Complete DOCET Safeguarding level 2 Core for both adults and Children. Again the same stuff required for other services so just upload your certificate again. If you haven’t done these yet then you can find them on the DOCET home page under Safeguarding. They take about an evening apiece to complete.
  •  Sign a subcontractor contract with Primary Eyecare Cheshire


Whilst Goldmann Tonometry is in theory a core competency for optometrists we are aware that it may be rather a long time since some optometrists actually used one. So if anyone needs any support or re-training in applanation tonometry please get in touch with the LOC via Sandie Mcbennett and we will set up some training sessions as needed.


It is the CCGs intention that all Glaucoma referrals based on IOPs or fields go through this service in future so the GPs will be sending any such referrals from non-participating practices back out to one of the participating practices. So it really is in everyone’s best interest for ALL practices in the Central Cheshire area take part as well as those in East and West Cheshire areas who have any patients who are registered with GPs in the Central area.
